In the three plays women disobey men authority following their beliefs. In each play men enforce their authority over women; women are treated as if they were less than men. In â€Å"A Doll’s House† play people can see how authority can destroy a happy marriage. This play is about a husband (Helmer) who imposes his authority over his wife (Nora). Gung Ho Movie Essay Example For Students

Gung Ho Movie Essay The Gung Ho Movie, starring Michael Keaton, is a great representation of the cultural differences that may arise between businesses when working together internationally. This movie, more specifically, expresses differences between the business approaches of America companies compared to Japanese companies. The plot is based on an American car factory that was shutdown and purchased by a Japanese company, Assan Motors. The factory is a lead source for the economy in the Midwestern town it is based in so it is important to keep the company going. The main actor, Michael Keaton, was motivated and aggressive with the proposal to keep the company running. He travels to Japan to make a presentation to Assan Motor management about continuing production. His attempt was successful. The company was re-opened but a Japanese management team was sent to help, guide, and monitor the American workers. These Japanese workers supervise and also collaborate with the American workers. Although the factory re-started, the wages were substantially lowered from the usual pay prior to the factory shutting down. The culture differences create obstacles and misunderstandings throughout the film. Japanese management demands a lot more productivity than the workers are used to. If productivity standards aren’t met, then overtime work is expected, without pay. In the beginning, it is clear that management lacks regard for the workers and their lives. The focus simply remains on productivity alone. This is unfamiliar to the American workers, which leads to them getting agitated. The relationships between the management team and the workers are also damaged due to the differences between cultures. Keaton portrays himself to be the group leader and attempts to mend the relationships but does not succeed at first. The management team almost came to a breaking point and gave up on the factory. Keaton steps in to protect the company. In his attempt, he proposes to match the best month of production in the Japanese factory. The management team agrees to the proposal. The conditions end up being, if the factory produces and completes 15,000 cars, then the company will continue production and the workers will gain their normal pay check back. If not, the factory will close indefinitely. Although the deal specifically was 15,000 cars, after Keaton discussed the conditions with the workers, the details are not properly discussed. He gives a motivating speech about being better than the Japanese, and then concludes his speech by telling the workers exactly what their goal for production was. By the reactions of the workers, this is an impossible goal. Miscommunication results in the workers thinking they could produce 13,000 cars and get a slight increase in pay. But this is not at all the case. Once the workers find out that the conditions were not flexible, they immediately aggressively discuss their discovery with Keaton. They end up working hard to complete and achieve their goal of 15,000 cars but fall a little short. The executive of Assan Motors comes to evaluate the final outcome and is less than impressed. But then after seeing the connectedness and team spirit in the factory so he chooses to keep the company open and give full raises. Overall, the movie shows obstacles that could occur when involved in international business. The vast differences between cultures make collaborating difficult because of the opposing work ethics and styles.

Question: Examine and discuss the characteristics of NPV and the role that this method plays in capital investment decision making. Discuss the advantages of using this method instead of the other evaluation methods? Answer: Net Present Value is considered as the present value in context to future cash outflows and inflows. It is used usually in capital budgeting in order to study the profitability or success of any investment or project. Therefore, it largely used by the organizations to make budgeting decisions so that they can gain profit in future. Moreover, the NPV helps the organizations in predicting the future losses or profit from any particular project or investment (Baldwin and Clark, 1991). On the other hand, it is explained as the variation between present value of cash outflow and cash inflows. Moreover, the discounted cash flow method is used for the valuation of net present value so that cash flow value of project can be known (Bierman and Bierman, 1988). Apart from that, if Net Present Value is positive then it shows a positive sign for the company and adds value to them and if the NPV is negative then the industry should not make decision to make an investment in that particular project (Burger and Hawkesworth, 2013). Therefore, if the NPV is higher than the investor can plan to make investment. The Net Present Value is effective as it helps in making comparisons of multiple numbers of potential investments. Therefore, the investor can take decision whether to make investment or not (Clark, Hindelang and Pritchard, 1979). Moreover, time value of money is accounted by net present value. Further, the future revenue can be converted by NPV to current dollars which assist the company to quantify the value of the project (Montier, 2010). Apart from that, Net Present value has advantage over other investment appraisal techniques such as payback period and accounting rate of return. These techniques do not consider the discount future cash flows but it is taken in account under NPV. On the other hand, if a certain investment has non-normal cash flows then NPV is a better option than IRR (Pratt and Grabowski, 2010). The non-normal cash flow arises when there is huge cash outflow at the end of any investment. Therefore, IRR cannot be applied. Moreover, in case of evaluation of mutually exclusive projects then Net Present Value is viable option than IRR method (Sinclair, 2010). On the other side, NPV provides more realistic reinvestment rate predictions than other appraisal techniques.
